The California Wilderness Coalition (CWC) protects the landscapes that make California unique, providing clean air and water, a home to wildlife, and a place for recreation and spiritual renewal.  Since 1976, CWC has been the only statewide organization in California dedicated to protecting California’s last remaining wild places.  We have field offices in Upland and Redding, CA.  Our central office is in Oakland, CA.

Membership/Development Associate

 

CWC is committed to diversifying our funding base through membership growth. With over 5,000 individual and organizational members, CWC requires a detail oriented, self-starter to manage the membership database, as well as direct mail acquisition, renewals, and appeals. The Associate will oversee the membership records, coordinating acknowledgment letters, appeals and other administrative support. She/he would also be responsible for accurate data entry, member communications and assistance in planning membership recruitment and retention events, as well as general office support. This position reports to the Executive Director. 

Summary of Primary Responsibilities 

  • Oversee membership mailings, preparing letters, appeals, acknowledgments and other materials needed for effective acquisition/renewal/upgrading of members 
  • Provide accurate and timely reports to track fundraising performance, including revenue generated, expenses and return rates 
  • Handle membership inquiries and communications thoroughly and promptly 
  • Provide general office support 

Data Management and Analysis 

  • Manage donor database to ensure the integrity of all data, handing data updates, changes of address, gift entry, and other database functions 
  • Accurately enter, acknowledge and track all membership fees and donations 
  • Prepare financial reports, including monthly Ground Spring report 
  • Reconcile gift entry reports each month, and as needed 
  • Complete data requests, including queries, gift entry, donor activity, etc. 
  • Run queries for segmentation and to analyze mailings 
  • Support donor contact through tracking donor contacts and preparing donor research 

Mailing Coordination 

  • Coordinate direct mail campaigns, including preparing data and lists, mail merges, ordering mailing supplies, working with all vendors (mail house/printers/USPS/etc.) 
  • Track costs and submit bills for vendors related to mailing coordination 
  • Oversee and manage list trades 
  • Maintain complete and up-to-date files documenting each direct mail campaign 

General Office 

  • Handle incoming phone calls and inquiries 
  • Support membership communications (proof, copy edit, fact check, manage distribution) including Action Alerts, Wilderness Record, Untrammelled, e-newsletters, website, etc. 
  • Support and staff events as needed, including preparing guest lists, tracking replies and handling logistics 
  • Participate in development of CWC annual budget 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  •  Minimum three years experience in fund development with experience managing membership and donor programs 
  • Ability to work independently on deadline-critical projects 
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail 
  • Experience with relational software such as E-Tapestry or Raiser’s Edge 
  • Strong skills with Microsoft Word /Microsoft Office applications and with Windows 
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills 
  • Ability to communicate well orally and in writing 
  • Commitment to the CWC mission
