Job Announcement: Development Director

Organizational Background

The California Wilderness Coalition (CWC) protects the landscapes that make California unique, providing clean air and water, a home to wildlife, and a place for recreation and spiritual renewal. Since 1976, CWC has been the only statewide organization in California dedicated to protecting California’s last remaining wild places. We have field offices in Upland and Redding, CA. Our central office is in Oakland, CA. CWC has a membership program of approximately 5,000 individuals and organizations, receives foundation and corporate grants and 100% participation by our board of directors. Position Description

The California Wilderness Coalition seeks a development director to diversify our funding base through membership growth, expansion of our major donor program, board engagement, and compelling communication of our work. The development director is responsible for maintaining and building relationships with existing donors, coordinating direct mail initiatives, cultivating new sources of support and planning special events. Additional responsibilities may include oversight of publication materials used in marketing and fundraising.

She/he will report directly to the Executive Director and will work closely with both the Associate Director and Operations Manager. The Development Director manages a full-time Membership Coordinator. The position will work from our central office in downtown Oakland. Please be advised that travel throughout California is required for this position.

Skills and Qualifications

Candidates should have at least three years of fund development experience, superior interpersonal and communication skills, knowledge of donor databases and a passion for environmental and social change.

  • Demonstrated success in securing gifts from major donors, foundations and corporations
  • Demonstrated success in meeting annual fund goals, development management, grant writing, and special events
  • Strong knowledge of principles, ethics and practices of successful fundraising
  • Ability to lead multiple long- and short-term projects simultaneously, meeting deadlines; ability to plan, prioritize, coordinate, and manage own work; ability to work unsupervised and make decisions and solve problems independently, effectively and creatively
  • Excellent verbal communication, interpersonal and relationship-building skills to effectively work with a variety of people and personalities; ability to communicate clearly in person and in writing
  • Proven ability to work effectively with board members, colleagues, donors and volunteers
  • Ability to present, inform and motivate individuals and groups about CWC’s mission and philanthropy
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Advanced degree preferred
  • Minimum three years experience in charitable fund development

Compensation

The salary range for the position is $70,000 -75,000, dependent upon experience and qualifications. CWC offers a comprehensive benefits package.
