JOIN US FOR A HIKE TO ALAMERE FALLS IN POINT REYES!

SATURDAY JANUARY 23rd - ALAMERE FALLS

The Phillip Burton Wilderness Area is the most accessible wilderness area in the Bay Area. As part of the Point Reyes National Seashore, this wilderness area symbolizes the beauty of coastal California. Cliffs drop dramatically from the trail to the Pacific Ocean and provide vistas only found in this beautiful state.

Originally the Point Reyes Wilderness, the name was changed to the Phillip Burton Wilderness Area in 1985 in recognition of Representative Burton's work on the California Wilderness Act. The 33,373 acres of the Phillip Burton Wilderness include 8,000 acres of roadless potential wilderness area. Its proximity to San Francisco makes it the first US biosphere reserve within a major metropolitan area of over 8 million people. The abundant biodiversity includes over 850 species of plants, 40 land mammals, dozens of marine mammals, and over 400 bird species. Sightings of red tailed hawks, tule elk, and harbor seals are common in this area.

OUR PLAN

We will meet at the trailhead parking lot at 10 am. This 8.2 mile in and out hike will take us along the coast past Bass and Pelican Lake, and will end at the cascading Alamere Falls that drop 50 feet to the beach.. Here we will eat lunch, enjoy the view, and then head back on the same trail. We expect to be back at the parking lot by 3 pm.

HOW TO GET THERE

Although just about 20 miles north of San Francisco, reaching the trailhead will take about an hour from the city. Get direct directions from your exact location through Google Maps here.

From US 101 heading north from San Francisco, exit CA 1/Mill Valley/Stinson Beach. Drive on Shoreline Highway to the junction with Almonte, about 1 mile. Turn left on CA 1 and drive about 2.5 miles to the junction with Panoramic. Continue straight on CA 1, past Stinson Beach and Bolinas Lagoon, about 13 miles to an unsigned junction with Olema-Bolinas Road (just past Bolinas Marsh). Turn left. Drive 0.1 mile to a T intersection with Olema-Bolinas Road, turn left, drive about 1 mile to the junction with Horseshoe Hill Road, and again, turn left. Drive to the next stop sign, then turn right onto Mesa Road. Drive about 4 miles, then continue the last 1 mile on the dirt road to the trailhead at the end of the road. If you have a high-clearance vehicle, take it. The road isn't terrible, but can be washed out and bumpy.

Again, map out directions from your exact location here.

WATER AND GEAR

Bring at least 2 liters of water, a lunch, and snacks for the hike. It should take about 4 hours and we will stop to eat lunch once we reach Alamere Falls. Wear sturdy hiking shoes and layers! It could be cold along the coast but warm once we get moving.

DIFFICULTY

This hike is about 4.1 miles each way or 8.2 miles roundtrip. The hiking is moderate with about 600 feet in elevation gain. Some scrambling and rock climbing is necessary to go to the beach at Alamere Falls, but not necessary to enjoy the view from the cliff.
